There are some people who prefer salty to sweet, and there are some who choose tapas to entrees, lastly there are those who choose appetizers to desserts. I am this person. I would choose a pot pie or pizza stand to a cupcake destination any hour. I would go to Pinks on La Brea vs Yogurtland for a late night snack any given day. Since I was little I was raised on savory salty food, and rice was a part of every meal. So naturally a grab and go Japanese Deli with a variety of onigiri opening up on Melrose Avenue in my neighborhood is going to be a dining game changer.

This new Japanese Musubi location is named after Kawaba Village in Japan where Yukihotaka rice is grown.  Owners of Kawaba Rice Ball wanted to bring Los Angeles their superior rice balls filled with a variety of choices with quality taste. One can choose from a selection of tuna, salmon, chicken, turkey, and pickled boiled eggs to name a few at an affordable price. The interiors are simple and modern, with white walls, minimal Japanese art, and dark wood tables. Patrons order at the counter and are offered complimentary green tea while they wait for their rice ball. During my experience at Kawaba I ordered three types of rice balls; the spicy tuna, chicken curry, and pickled boiled egg called the “Bomb”. I noticed that the rice of the onigiri fell apart easily when biting into the center, so snag some napkins for this grab and go bite. The Spicy Tuna onigiri was perfect, and I recommend getting their spicy mayo sauce to apply to every nibble.  Kawaba Rice Ball eatery on Melrose in Los Angeles, a must try!
