Breakfast cereal is one of the most popular foods in the world, and is enjoyed by hundreds of millions of people daily.  In fact, 50 percent of Americans say they start their day with cereal and the average American consumes 160 bowls of cereal per year. So in honor of National Cereal Day here’s a list of our top five healthy cereals.

5 Favorite Healthy Cereals:

1- General Mills Cheerios – A classic and family favorite. Cheerios is a low-calorie choice with 100 calories per cup. This cereal tops the healthiest cereal list because of its low sugar content at just 1g. The Children’s Hospital of Boston has selected Cheerios as a healthiest cereal pick, which should give parents confidence that their children are eating a healthy breakfast when they serve this cereal.

2- Kellogg’s Special K Protein Plus – Serious athletes and individuals with higher protein needs will be excited to taste these lightly sweetened flakes. Providing 10g of protein in a 3/4 cup portion, this low-calorie, low-sugar cereal also gives a high dose of fiber at 5g per serving.

3- General Mills Wheat Chex – Score one for this supermarket staple: It’s low in calories, high in protein and fiber  and made from 100 percent whole-grain wheat. Sugar is the second ingredient on the list, but we’re willing to overlook that minor drawback since the overall sugar count is still low. 130 calories, 8g fiber, 7g protein, 7g sugar

4- Uncle Sam’s Raisin Bran – Good luck finding a raisin bran with less sugar per cup than a cookie (Kellogg’s Raisin Bran has 18g per serving!) – which is why we love this low-sugar, high-protein score from Uncle Sam. There’s no sugar- or oil-coated raisins or long list of fillers in this cereal: The satisfying flake-and-raisin mixture is made from only four ingredients. 190 calories, 6g fiber, 6g protein, 8g sugar

5- Quaker Protein Instant Oatmeal – Oats are a perfect whole grain to provide energy that lasts throughout the day. Quaker’s methods for milling, cutting, steaming and flaking the wholesome, nutritious whole grains in their products have been perfected over many years. It’s what lets them control cooking time and texture, and it guarantees that their oatmeal has that distinct toasted, nutty Quaker flavor. Packed with 10 grams of protein per serving, it is an ideal breakfast option for every athlete. 240 calories, 5g fat, 10g protein, 12g sugar
